Standing up for our local high school: Cllr. Ed Bridges and Cllr. Cathy Pearcy are appalled that Labour is questioning the rationale for keeping Cathays High open.

The Gabalfa Focus Team has welcomed council proposals that Cathays High and Whitchurch High should continue to support their existing catchment areas and receive significant investment.

However, alarm has been expressed that the proposal has not yet been agreed by all political parties, with Labour councillors questioning the rationale for keeping Cathays High open.

Liberal Democrats say Cathays High is an integral part of education in the city because it serves such a wide geographical area. The Gabalfa Focus Team is concerned that closing Cathays High could result in pupils from as far away as Newport Road having to commute to Whitchurch High.

The Lib Dems have also pointed to the recent inspection report at Cathays High, which stated that the school is performing extremely well.

Local Lib Dem councillor, Cathy Pearcy, said: "This is about fairness. Both schools can remain open and still serve their existing catchment areas. We need a secondary school for our area, and the Lib Dems will do all we can to stop Labour from scuppering that."

Cllr. Ed Bridges added: "Liberal Democrats will continue to work to support our local high school."
