Council plans to improve dangerous school crossing9.53.49am GMT Thu 16th Nov 2006
Cathays Liberal Democrat councillors have successfully campaigned to install a traffic bollard on the Cathays Terrace/Crwys Road junction, to make it safer for pedestrians and lollipop ladies. At the October Cathays PACT meeting, this crossing was considered a top priority for local residents and a large petition was collected and presented to the council. Jon Aylwin, Welsh Lib Dem County Councillor for Cathays commented, "The problem seems to be that far too many motorists are either driving through red and amber lights, or turning left from Crwys Road onto Cathays Terrace." When the traffic lights are green on Crwys Road, pedestrians are still able to cross Cathays Terrace. This shouldn't be a problem as motorists are not allowed to turn onto Cathays Terrace, but some do, putting lollipop ladies and children at risk. Local resident, Ceri Jones added, "The new bollard, which the Liberal Democrat controlled council has agreed to install by February 2007, will act as a small traffic refuge for lollipop ladies. If motorists do turn onto Cathays Terrace, the bollard will protect the hard working people that work tirelessly to keep our children safe."
