Councillor Leader Rodney Berman outside the multi-million pound Central Library and John Lewis Department Store
The opening of Wales' largest department store, the UK's largest John Lewis store outside of London, is helping Cardiff to buck the current downward economic trend.
The new John Lewis store marks the latest phase in a multi-million pound regeneration of Cardiff's city centre which is being taken forward in partnership with Cardiff's Lib Dem-led council.
It forms the anchor store of the new St David's 2 development which is set to fully open on 22 October. The new John Lewis store brings over 700 new jobs to the city, with the St David's 2 shopping centre overall set to take that figure to 4000 new jobs once fully occupied. The St David's 2 centre is the result of a £700m+ investment in partnership with Land Securities and Capital Shopping Centres.
The development has also seen the creation of a new Central Library for Cardiff which opened earlier in the year. The iconic £18m library sits alongside the new John Lewis store and has been built as an exemplar of environmental best practice, constructed to BREEAM excellence standard.
Lib Dem council leader, Rodney Berman, said: "The opening of the new John Lewis store has been eagerly anticipated and marks an important phase in a massive regeneration of Cardiff's city centre. This has been an exciting year for Cardiff with the opening of our new Central Library, the successful hosting of the first test match in the 2009 Ashes Series and the opening of the new Cardiff City football stadium.
"Cardiff's Lib Dem-led council has played a leading role in driving all these developments forward, helping propel Cardiff to new heights as a vibrant, quality-of-life capital city."
