At 2pm on the 15th November, the partnership behind Cardiff's single non-emergency number were notified of the Home Office's intention to withdraw funding for the service, giving only three months notice (until 14th February 2008).
101 was specifically set up to take calls relating to anti-social behaviour and other community safety issues and can boast a 90% caller satisfaction rate.
All those involved in the number are extremely disappointed at the Home Office's decision not to continue with the funding for 101, in particular the amount of notice given for the withdrawal. 101 is not a failing service. It has met and far exceeded the expectations that anyone had of it since its launch in the summer of 2006, and this is a bitter blow for everyone involved.
Given current spending commitments, the partnership feels that they can continue with the Cardiff service well into 2008. This will allow time for other funding streams to be sought, hopefully securing a future for 101.
Cllr Judith Woodman, Liberal Democrats Deputy Leader of Cardiff Council said,
''This decision made by the Home Office has shocked me and I am deeply concerned at its impact.''
"The service has achieved so much for Cardiff. A recent independent report by the University of Glamorgan concluded that the City's residents generally feel better-off since the launch of the number."
"We will do our best to ensure that 101 has a future within Cardiff and, from the calls of support we have received in recent months, I am confident that the City's residents feel as strongly about the value of the service as do the community safety agencies across Cardiff."
Proven benefits for Cardiff since the launch of 101 in June 2006 include: • 90% caller satisfaction rate.
• The significant reduction in the number of days it takes to remove an abandoned vehicle
(5 days less)
• The redeployment of more than 25 police officers to front-line Neighbourhood Policing
duties as a result of the information and advice provided at 101.
• A 500% increase in referrals to the council's noise nuisance team.
