Assembly candidates, Ed Bridges and John Dixon, have welcomed Lib Dem plans to fix Labour's broken promises on school building repairs.

The Welsh Liberal Democrats have promised to tackle Wales' backlog of school repairs.

Labour promised to bring all schools up to scratch by 2010, but are nowhere near achieving their target so have abandoned the policy. The Lib Dems say Labour failed to realise the extent of the problem, and have left pupils being taught in unsuitable facilities.

Cardiff North's Lib Dem Assembly candidate, Ed Bridges, said: "Creating the best learning environment is vital. The conditions in which our children study are crucial to delivering the best learning experience possible. Rhodri Morgan's Labour party has let down the pupils of Wales."

The Liberal Democrats have said they will ensure that councils have the money they need to make schools fit for learning following a proper Wales-wide inspection. The most recent estimates show the need for over £700 million of investment.

Regional list candidate for the Welsh Assembly, John Dixon, said: "It is unacceptable that so many pupils are still being taught in cold, out-dated buildings or portakabins. Voters are sick of Labour's broken promises, and want proper solutions to the mess made by Rhodri Morgan and his cronies."
