Wales Needs to Preserve its Manufacturing says Randerson

2011 Ionawr 21 1:55 PM

The striking diagram above shows the decimation of Welsh manufacturing under Labour and now Plaid who have the Minister in charge in Wales.

Shadow Welsh Liberal Democrat Economy Spokesperson Jenny Randerson AM said "One of Wales' great strengths is its higher level skills in the engineering sector but without help it will waste away to nothing. We need to be supporting start up businesses in the sector by reducing the red tape around getting training and assistance.

"We also need to be doing more than a press release to the Western Mail to help them secure Olympic Contracts. My own FOI requests in October of last year revealed how little Ieuan Wyn Jones had done.

"Manufacturing can offer a highly rewarding career for many people in Wales if their skills are utilised and there are apprenticeships available in the field."

Notes:

The number of workforce jobs in manufacturing in Wales fell by 20,000 (12.9 per cent)

between September 2009 and September 2010 to stand at 135,000 (10.0 per cent of all workforce jobs).
